The American Legion is proud to announce its annual sponsorship of its 75th Annual Speech Program on the Constitution of the United States. The youth of our nation are offered an opportunity to participate in the American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program, "A Constitutional Speech Contest" at the school, District, and State levels as well as at the National level which will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 14 and 15, 2012. The Louisiana State Champion and a chaperon will represent Louisiana in the 2012 National Contest in Indianapolis, all expenses paid. Each Department (state) winner who is certified and participates in the first round of the National Contest will receive $1,500. Each student chosen to participate in the second round but does not advance to the finals will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship to pursue education beyond high school. Additional scholarship monies will be presented to the top three finalists in the National Contest as follows: 1st - $18,000; 2nd - $16,000; 3rd - $14,000. ALL SCHOLARSHIP MONIES ARE IN ADDITION TO "TOPS".
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS: There is an outstanding and capable student in every high school in your system who deserves and opportunity to participate and to earn scholarship money in this educational Americanism program. The American Legion Post nearest your school will be glad to assist in scheduling your school contest and in preparing your students for the Oratorical Contest.
POST COMMANDERS AND ORATORICAL CHAIRMEN: Please personally contact the principal of the high schools nearest to your Post and, together with your Post Americanism Chairman, assist in preparing a student to represent your Post and the school in your Oratorical Contest. The following presentation of Medals is only a suggestion, not mandatory: Post Commanders/Chairmen should present each Post winner a BRONZE MEDAL. District Chairmen should present a GOLD MEDAL to the District winner and SILVER MEDAL to the runner up. District winner will move to the State Finals. Ordering information on all these awards can be obtained by contacting the Department Adjutant.
All participants aned coaches (teachers) are urged to study the rules brochures. It is imperative that close attention be paid to the section "ASSIGNED TOPICS". Brochures can be obtained from District Chairmen.
ORDER OF COMPETITION: High School/Post - Each District Chairman is to set their own dates and notify all Posts in their District. District Contest - All information on the District winner needs to be in the Department Chairman's hand no later than FEBRUARY 24, 2012 in order to meet the National requirements. The Department of Louisiana State Oratorical Contest was held on March 5, 2011 at Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 in Shreveport, LA. Results of the competition are 1st Place Winner, Michael Paul Webber (6th District); 2nd Place Winner, Sheldon “Ryan” Hitchens (7th District); 3rd Place Winner, Hailey Lane Grey (5th District). Department Commander Dan Leonard is shown in photos below presenting awards to the participants.
